Burlesque or neo-burlesque is the revival and updating of the traditional burlesque performance. Burlesque was a form of variety entertainment, including skits and dancenumbers, often satirical and heckling the upper class.
Burlesque became popular in the second half of the 1800s. One of the characteristic ingredients were outfit with a focus on the female body and jokes with sexual innuendo.
Though based on the traditional burlesque act, the new form encompasses a wider reach of performance styles: Neo-burlesque acts can be anything from classic striptease, modern dance, theatrical minidramas or comedic mayhem. As with the earlier burlesque,neo-burlesque is more focused on the "tease" in striptease than the "strip".
